The art and culture in Manila is no doubt a lively one, what with individuals and communities, young and old, keeping their radar afloat. In the performing arts department, it's rare to detect a lineup of plays that resonates across various demographics, all the while being ceaselessly entertaining and far from vagueness.
In Repertory Philippines' (REP) 83rd Season, under Liesl Batucan's artistic direction, we're about to discover a fresh theater production voice as she brings forth a dynamic lineup of creatives and thespians, working collaboratively to realize REP's mission and vision.
Last season, we saw a different side of the country's first president at Miong, laughed at awkward reunions at Father's Day,witnessed the saying "the show must go on" come to life at The Dresser, and cheerily sang along familiar characters at The Quest for the Adarna.
REP's 83rd Season holds a mirror up to human life, inviting audiences to identify with a diverse range of characters. Check out REP's sneak-peek of their upcoming shows:
Stage Kiss (February 7 to March 1)
Directed by Carlos Siguion-Reyna
Two stage actors, He and She, were as cast as lovers in a 1930s melodrama. After sharing several kisses on stage, they rekindle the love they thought was long gone. Though a love story on the surface (it is a rom-com, in essence), Stage Kiss enlivens the high stakes of love on stage aka a thespian's workplace. What happens when life imitates art and art imitates life?
Anna in the Tropics (March 13 to April 5)
Directed by Joey Mendoza
Yet another award-winning play arrives at the Onstage, helmed by New-York based production designer. Anna in the Tropics showcases the power of literature—how it can influence decisions and affect lives. The play delivers allusions to the inequality and corruption engulfing the laborers beyond its Floridian setting.
Carousel (May 1 to 24)
Directed by Toff de Venecia
It's a musical cap-off for REP's 82nd Season as young renowned director Toff de Venecia shows an equally heartbreaking and heartwarming story. Carousel, TIME Magazine's "Best Musical of the 20th Century, stars a star-studded cast who give flesh to characters that are hardly pawns in the narrative; it is led by Nikki Gil and Gian Magdangal as a young couple who undergoes hardships because of poverty—a complexity that is tragically and wonderfully human.
Snow White and the Prince (September 12 to January 31, 2021)
Directed by Joy Virata
A REP Original, this REP Theater for Young Audiences' (RTYA) musical is nothing short of a children's essential plays to see. If 81st's RTYA, Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale, was any indication, this musical is set to capture the hearts of both kids and kids-at-hearts who embraced the beloved classic as a close friend would embrace them. It's Snow White as you know it, a tale of the fine chasm between good and evil, but with a witty and adorable take!
A rekindling of flames from a retired relationship, a literature-induced transformation of lives, a whirlwind love affair, and a fresh and original retelling of a princess story. Are you ready to see all these stories unfold on the stage?
