Millennials grew up with the OPM rock era of the early 2000s. It’s such a joy when we see our childhood bands and artists thrive up until this day. And one of those who stood the test of time in the OPM industry is Ebe Dancel.
Ebe is the former frontman of the band Sugarfree, which popularized the songs “Burnout,” “Hari ng Sablay,” “Prom,” and “Wag Ka Nang Umiyak.”The band members were together for around 12 years until they decided to disband in 2011. Ebe continued his music journey as a solo artist. And now, he is in his 20th year in the music scene.

During his career as a solo artist, he released two studio albums: Dalawang Mukha Ng Pag-ibig in 2011 and Bawat Daan in 2015. His songs went far as they’ve been used in TV series and even jingle commercials. He has a stable career and music and performs in gigs from time to time. We can say Ebe Dancel is one of the timeless OPM musicians we have.
But even great artists have their lows. According to Ebe, 2018 was a dark period for him, realizing he was tired and only forcing himself to do the show. He thinks it’s a disservice to the stage and the people who love him. He almost stopped writing and playing, until he came to a realization.
“There are doctors. There are lawyers and there are musicians. And I really think that my purpose on this planet that God gave me is to be on stage and to play and make people happy or sad,” he said during an interview for Kwentuhan Tayo press conference.
So as a thank you to the people who stayed by his side through the years, Ebe will hold his first-ever solo concert. He will play with the Manila String Machine, a cutting-edge string quartet and string orchestra composed of musicians who come from top music institutions. He wants to make the concert as intimate as possible and promises heart-tugging 20 years’ worth of songs.
We sure hope to see Ebe sing our favorite hits and write more songs in the future. “As long as people still want me to play and maybe to write songs, then this is where I belong,” he said.
