Bayongciaga: Your Classic Bayong With A Modern Twist

Whenever we have a trip to our local wet and dry market, we would see people carrying bags called bayong, where they put the meat and vegetables they bought. But Bayongciaga believes a bayong is not meant for mere wet market shopping.

Founded by Javier “Javi” Villaruel, Bayongciaga plays on words: the high-end brand Balenciaga; and the Ilonggo sentence “Bayong siya ‘ga.” Javi started from buy-and-sell bayongs from Laguna until it became a hit for his social media friends. He even brought some of it abroad, and foreigners became attracted to its charm. Now, Bayonciaga has different designs and sizes people can choose from.

A Stylish and Flexible Filipino Piece

This homegrown brand creates bags that will complement various kinds of outfits and lifestyle. From classic black and white, block colors to customized hand-painted handbags, Bayongciaga offers different styles to its customers. It’s also clear Bayongciaga innovated the classic bayong. They made these woven bags into sling bags, handbags, shoulder bags, and even backpacks. There are bags that can fit a 13” laptop—perfect for those who are working and have to be always on the go.

Bayongciaga either uses Polypropelene or bamboo as material for most of its bags. Each one is handwoven carefully, ensuring the durability and quality of each bayong—it screams Filipino all over it. Now you can flaunt your bayong, not only in wet markets but also in malls, events, beach, and other hangouts.

Bayongs For a Cause

The weavers of Bayongciaga bags are mostly stay-at-home moms from Laguna, while some are weavers from Palawan; they invite and teach each other to make these bags. The brand also partnered with local painters to give them livelihood opportunities. Bayongciaga gives most of the profit to its partners.

Apart from providing a livelihood to local artisans, Bayonciaga also advocates for Cancer Awareness. For three years now, they collaborate with I CanServe Foundation, an advocacy group for breast cancer awareness. They crafted exclusive bags for the organization’s event or pop-up shops and the profit will benefit the I CanServe Foundation.

Bayongciaga is not only a local brand, but also a homegrown brand with a heart and purpose.

A Showroom of Pinoy Creativity

Javi wants Bayonciaga to remind people of Filipino creativity. When they see this modern bayong, it should amaze anyone on how a simple item like bayong can transform into something versatile and classy.

The different styles and designs show how Filipinos are natural crafters and artisans who can create products that are world-class. And this is what the Filipinos have to offer. Bayongciaga shows us more reasons to genuinely #LoveLocal.
