Tropical storm Jenny isn't the only occasion in our area of responsibility this month. There's also our mixed emotions, brought about by the latest OPM our lyrical geniuses have tendered us.
From cool pop to alternative rock, here are the best and latest tracks under our radar this month:
'DANCE FOR ME!' by Fern.
"Find it harder to be calm. Only love you when I'm gone"
If Fern Tan's (aka Fern.) first release this year, "Sober Up," is about sobering up from alcohol, "DANCE FOR ME!" is about love in the midst of substance abuse. It was released with a music video featuring Mckenzie Kinsella and is directed by Sindikato's Enzo Valdez. And if the M/V is an indication, Fern.'s style is growing and improving.
'Alive' by Over October
"With the two of us together we'd end up with broken hearts"
While we’re waiting for Over October’s debut album set to release this year, Over October graces us again with a love song that hits us where it hurts. "Alive" is for people loving someone from a distance; hopeless yet grateful to be away from the edge of being broken.
'Bukod-Tangi' by Unique Salonga
"Kahit may paghiyaw sa 'king pangalan at kahit naririnig ang palakpakan ay ramdam ko ang pag-iisa"
With last month's "Lamang Lupa" and this month's "Bukod-Tangi," we're getting a peek of what could be Unique's deep loneliness-themed album. The whistles and simple beats are catchy—no doubt. But ponder on the lyrics and next thing you know, you're sharing the soloist's solitude.
'Rumours' by Nathan & Mercury
"I wanna hear your rumours, whisper the lies in your mind"
Sony Music PH's Nathan & Mercury asks the question: "What is it like to hear a rumor?" With the thriving culture of gossip and fake news, songs with this kind of intention deserve a play. The band released a music video of Rumour directed by Kevin Mayuga, who also directed the band's first M/V, "Fools."
'Fiend' by James Reid ft. Just Hush
"I can’t get enough, I think I’m in love, I can’t get enough, I think we’re in love"
"Partners in crime" is a term of endearment not so foreign to many relationships, but James Reid turned it into reality in his latest single, "Fiend." The song is about an addictive love with risky tendencies. Watch the M/V to unravel the story yourself.
'Lumpin' by Shirebound And Busking
"Inyo na'ng lahat ng 'yan, mga gahaman"
The name Iego Tan akaShirebound And Busking rose to fame even more when the musician released a full album entitled For Princesses, By Thieves (O Mga Awit Ng Hiraya Para Sa Guni-Guning Sinta). Just when you think he reached his peak, he surprises us with yet another album “Lumpin”. Did we mention it comes with three songs? And it’s all as filled with emotions.
'Brooklyn' by Carousel Casualties
"You found the perfect timing, you're the missing silver lining"
Carousel Casualties called the honesty o'clock with their latest single, "Brooklyn," and we're all left heartbroken. You know the feeling of holding on to a dying fire to keep you warm? Or the feeling of waiting for something that isn't coming? Thanks to this quintet, we're all too familiar again. But it also means it's time to reassess our emotions.
