Your "shelf-efficacy" is either defined by quantity or quality books (or both) but either way, you know you want to be in the loop for upcoming book sales. Gas up and prepare for a road trip because the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale is taking over the LausGroup Event Centre in San Fernando, Pampanga, from July 12 to July 22.
Our Kapampangan friends who may be looking to fill the void that the Manila and Cebu editions created will be thrilled for Big Bad Wolf (BBW) Book Sale's first visit in their hometown. The initiative is opening a door for curious book lovers to be "new cubs" of the Wolf, hence creating a distinct community in this city.
As always, the book sale is offering a vast range of titles at affordable prices—50% to 90% off the retail price, to be specific. Even if you're on a budget, you'll go home with a haul from novels, young adult titles, crime thrillers, and design and self-help books among others. On top of it all, the book sale is open for 24 hours for 11 days straight, which begs the question: 2 AM shopping, anyone?
There's no doubt the BBW is a place for shelf-validation that our bookworm cards may not be revoked. It'll be no surprise if Manillennials are tempted to bring their book luggage hours away from the metro, but if more encouragement is what you need, then it's what you'll get.
An "excuse" for a quick R&R
Especially for a family or a group of friends who listed San Fernando in their travel plans, this event is a perfect excuse to stop postponing the inevitable.
From history-filled tourist spots to cafes and restaurants, Pampanga is inviting enough to call for a quick escape from Metro Manila (and its traffic flaws, definitely). There's even a theme park for kids and kids-at-heart to enjoy or simply roam around. Then hey, a quick stopover at San Fernando sounds nice, to say the least.
An opportunity to help underprivileged children
As one Philippine representative who's got a big heart for underprivileged children once said, "I stand here today because someone believed in me and we owe it to our children to believe in them." Yep, that's Miss Universe Catriona Gray for you. We have a myriad of platforms to choose from when it comes to supporting advocacies; if you're a book lover and you share the same cause as Cat's, the BBW Book Sale is one intelligent choice.
It's been six months since the 2019 BBW Book Sale in Manila was held, but the Gawad Kalinga (GK), the charity supported by the BBW's “Red Readerhood Program”, has been busy. In an interview with Inside Manila during BBW Pampanga's VIP Day, Gawad Kalinga Executive Director Luis Oquiñena revealed that the BBW and GK have raised enough money to convert a cemetery in Lorega, Cebu, into a GK village.
"There are now 15 [volunteer] mothers who, every week, get the Big Bad Wolf books and go to 10 other communities and read to the people, not just in the kindergarten," says Oquiñena. This is the kind of culture, which he aptly calls "unleashing hope," that one book can create and one champion can build. Meanwhile, in Manila, GK was able to donate books to a certain hospital with children who have cancer.
When a child reads, they begin to aspire; but poverty breaks that gift. With that in mind, it's easy to remember that the book you purchased isn't only going to entertain you but also create a lasting impact on the lives of the children in need. It's the one reason Big Bad Wolf Book Sale 2019 deserves your visit. So really, what's a two- to three-hour trip and a couple of hundred bills if it means real change is coming?
"To someone who hasn't had anything, a book is a dream," Jacqueline Ng, Founder of the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale.
With ideal proximity and good cause considered, it's safe to say the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale Pampanga is not merely a book sale. It turns many children's flyleaf for the good. Book your schedule, bring the essentials, and happy shopping!
