An internship can give a student an edge when finding a job and explore a path—it can make or break your career. It’s not easy to find a company that would give you all your needed skills, experience, and what-have-yous. Luckily, students have the saving grace in finding the right job training especially when they’re on the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) strand with STEM Forward.
Moving Forward with STEM Forward
STEM Forward is an online Digital Platform helps students find internships for their strand. This initiative is made to create a digital portal that will provide industry linkages to Senior High School (SHS) students in the STEM Track.
Instead of going from building to building or website to website, the STEM Forward platform will help senior high students explore and find internship opportunities with just a few clicks. STEM Forward will improve the students’ chances of getting trained by STEM executives and build the needed skills in the future workplace. To start, simply register online and proceed to search for internship programs on the Edukasyon website.
A Win-Win Initiative
Students aren’t the only ones who can benefit from this initiative. STEM Forward helps schools by providing them with more immersion program options from various companies. It also helps the educational institution work hand-in-hand with the STEM companies in monitoring their students’ internship program, which helps in the transparency between institutions with regards to the students’ welfare.
Likewise, businesses also gain from STEM Forward; it creates opportunities for companies and start-ups to enhance their existing Corporate Social Responsibility program through the STEM Forward Senior High School Immersion Program. It also gives them the avenue to test the competencies and see the employability of SHS graduates. As they take part in this initiative, they will help in the development of the students’ skills.
A Step Towards Empowering Women in STEM
The Philippine Women’s Economic Network (PhilWEN), through the Philippine Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (PBCWE), and Edukasyon, launched this platform for this advocacy.
This is because when we hear STEM, we still often have the connotation that men dominate this sector. While it is true that few women in the Philippines take careers related to STEM, there are women who make a name for themselves in this field. As STEM Forward makes access to STEM careers more accessible to everyone, this also means more women can take on the track.
Soon, STEM careers will help find a balance between men and women—males won’t dominate it alone. Until then, we are hopeful to have more platforms like STEM Forward to empower not only women but also every student from all walks of life. Through internships with the right companies, they can be equipped with the skill set they need for their future workplace.
