If you have attended a school in Manila, and are a committed commuter, you probably know how to navigate through the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 2 stations with your eyes closed. LRT-2 caters mostly to students since it travels across the Manila University Belt. It traverses from west to east, from Recto station in Manila to Santolan station in Marikina.
But the LRT-2 is more than just a transport system—it is a part of a commuter’s life—a potential part of a Ted Talk... In the everyday churn, we can almost relate ourselves to the everyday things, yes, even to LRT stations. In case you’re too tired to notice, each station has a distinct personality, much like every commuter does. Read about ‘em below:
In a fast-paced city like Manila, it’s always best to be practical. If you need someone to guide (and to survive with) through Manila’s streets, Recto is the person to befriend. They know where the cheapest finds are, the shortcuts, and the ins and outs of Manila.
The model student
School is life for Legarda. They are the people who find happiness in succeeding with their chosen fields of interests. The station is known for its surrounding universities in Manila like Central Escolar University, San Beda University, and College of the Holy Spirit. If you need a study buddy, Legarda is ready to quiz you day in and day out.
The resourceful comrade
Pureza may seem a quiet station, but dig a little deeper, and you’ll find it filled with students from all walks of life. Pureza is always empathetic. Here, you’ll also find small school supplies shops, convenience stores, and fast food restaurants. They can provide almost anything you need without being too flashy.
The calm, chill and collected
V. Mapa is named after a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines—fair and reasonable; speaks up only when their valuable opinion is needed. V. Mapa is the quiet one in the group, but when they speak up, expect everyone will listen (and often agree) with their thoughts and opinions.
The selectively social
J. Ruiz doesn’t mind being alone. They are used to being alone, being the only station in San Juan City. It is also one of the quietest stops as fewer people off board J. Ruiz compared to others. If you need an air of comfortable silence, J.Ruiz is that friend.
The tech guru
If you want to know about the latest computers, gadgets, and software at a reasonable price, Gilmore is your guy. Full of gadget hubs you can choose from, and assist you from buying your new laptops to fixing your old PC. Gilmore is the cool IT person you can count on.
The outspoken and candid
Betty Go-Belmonte is one of the most chill stations in the system. They are quiet, but they’re the loudest when it comes to airing out causes she’s passionate about. Being named after the founder of a newspaper company, Betty Go-Belmonte knows when to speak up and spread only the truth.
The go lang nang go
Cubao is always inviting. Most of the time, they are busy, but they know how to have a good time. Whether it’s shopping and bar-hopping or immerse yourself in art, Cubao will always know where to bring you to uplift your spirits—most especially after a tiring day.
The ukay kween
We all have that fashionable friend who brags the price tags of her clothes, not because they’re expensive, but because they’re super cheap. For Anonas, clothes should make a statement, but it shouldn’t bore a hole in your pocket. So, they have a solution: ukay-ukay! Enjoy a day of shopping with them any time of the week. With the station directly connected to a building full of bargain finds, they will help you look through racks of clothes, shoes, and bags—everything you need to complete your OOTD.
The lowkey cool kid
Okay, Katipunan might look arrogant at first but once you get to know them better, you’ll realize they are actually fun to be with and the friend you’ll want to keep. Whenever you just want to low-key chill, Katipunan is the go-to with its intimate cafes and dining spots.
Santolan is the one you can count on if you want everything in its order. They make great travel companions as they enjoy creating detailed itineraries and organize happenings here and there. Santolan Depot, where trains are cleaned and maintained, and Operations Control Center are both near the station, proving Santolan wants nothing misplaced or go out of hand.
Different destinations and personalities but all of these stations make up a whole system which would fall apart without one. So make the most of every ride, enjoy the company of different stations. Once in a while, get off board a place you are unfamiliar of—you’ll never know what you might find.
