Throughout the years, Darna’s character evolved as different actresses like Vilma Santos, Sharon Cuneta, and Angel Locsin portrayed her. And it’s no wonder that this female superheroine has played an important role in every generation’s childhood.

Last 2018, Darna was reported to get another revamp with Liza Soberano at the lead role. But early this year, Liza withdrew from the role after an injury.

Star Hunt, ABS-CBN’s branded audition caravan, is not slowing down in searching for this generation’s Darna. On May 1, they posted a casting call on Facebook in the quest for the next Darna!

This latest installation of Darna, to be directed by Heneral Luna’s Jerrold Tarog, will be a coming-of-age film and the deciding factors in the role are the actress’ charm and acting prowess.

Many commented on how Darna should look with white flawless skin and tall and slim body—global standards of beauty. But in an era where the general audiences become more intelligent in what they watch and consume, we hope to see a more empowered and properly represented Darna through these actresses.

Nadine Lustre

In case you’re living under the rock, our Queen (and president) Nadine Lustre was the leading contender for the role. Nadine also showed interest in being the new Darna. With her Morena features and slender body, she would make for the perfect Darna. We’d love to see dancing and singing Darna!

Bretman Rock

We want to see more members of the LGBTQIA+ in television roles. Perhaps, one of the greatest ways to make mainstream media more inclusive is by casting them in big TV series like Darna.

Kevin Balot

Just like Bretman, maybe “a girl named Kevin” would be a perfect fit? We can’t wait to see a more inclusive Darna!

Mercedes Cabral

Mercedes Cabral is one of the most daring and versatile actresses in Philippine TV and film industry. Often lauded as “Queen of Philippine Indie”, she would also make an empowered Darna who unapologetically shows the world her real self.

Kylie Versoza

Although she didn’t originally come from the acting industry, Miss International 2016 Kylie Versoza’s beauty queen physique and wits would make up for a classy and mental health advocate Darna.

Chai Fonacier

If we want Darna to represent the whole Filipino community, and by the whole, we mean even those from the province. And this is only attainable if they cast someone like Chai from and who can easily win many hearts.

Now is not about conforming to standards, it’s about breaking free from it to empower different people from different walks of life. Darna may only be a fictitious character we all loved growing up but today, she’s more than that—the modern day Darna is poised to shape a new landscape for the Philippine superhero franchise and represent the Filipino community in and out of the country. At a time of division and confusion, modern-day Darna is all we need to reflect on our culture and the societal problems we’re all facing.
