The 2018 Philippine Animation Festival, Animahenasyon, received more than a hundred entries from all over the country—a testament to the Philippine animation's current status. 20 finalists were chosen and on November 14, the decision has been made.

You can watch these films for free on November 15 and 16 at the FDCP Cinematheque Center Manila. Who knows? You might get inspired to breathe life into your amazing idea flowing with your brain cells or share your film that's lying around and waiting for an avenue to share.

You need not delay the inevitable. As early as now, you can start preparing for these awards:

The Grand Prize Award

Category: Professional and Student
Prize: certificate, trophy, P40,000 cash prize (Student) and P50,000 (Professional)

A.K.A. the award you can wear like a crown, heavy and blinding. Rookies who aim to get their foot in the door first, they're taking it one step at a time. However, there are cases wherein freshies with fresh eyes and ideas often get that sweet, sweet recognition. The jury grants the Grand Prize Award to the participant with the best narrative animation, exhibiting overall artistic and technical excellence.

The John Martin Award

Category: Professional/Student
Prize: certificate, trophy, P20,000 cash prize

Honoring John Alexander Martin’s contribution to the local animation industry, this award is sponsored by Fernando Ortigas, the same man who shelled out millions to fund the 2015 award-winning Filipino historical biopic film Heneral Luna, which was directed by Jerrold Tarog. Display your exceptional talent in 2D traditional and hand-drawn animation technique to grab this credit.

Best Regional Entry

Category: Professional/Student
Prize: certificate, trophy, P20,000 cash prize

The Philippine Animation Film Festival stays true to its nature by recognizing skilled Filipino animators outside Metro Manila and the whole National Capital Region. Heads up, rural citizens!

Jury's Special Citation

Category: Professional/Student
Prize: certificate, trophy, P10,000 cash prize

Some entries are too good of a film, the jury just had to honor it. The decision relies heavily on the panel so make your entry as unique or unusual as possible to get their attention.

Best in Storytelling Award

Category: Professional and Student
Prize: certificate, trophy, P10,000 cash prize

Panels from the 12th Animahenasyon repeatedly mentioned that a film, animation or not, doesn't work without a good story to tell. Your story should be on point; it's not Animahenasyon without "imagination."

Best in Technical Award

Category: Professional and Student
Prize: certificate, trophy, P10,000 cash prize

If your strength is in 2D, 3D, or stop-motion animation techniques, you're a notch higher above the rest in this award. Technical quality is your game, make a name for it.

Best Production Design

Category: Professional and Student
Prize: certificate, trophy, P10,000 cash prize

Attention to detail is no joke. It takes a lot of revisions until you achieve a satisfaction perfectionists can all relate to. Your relatives may not notice the background and character designs but the jury will.

Best Non-narrative Animation Award

Category: Professional and Student
Prize: certificate, trophy, P10,000 cash prize

Abstract films, trailers, TVCs, showreels, explainer videos—a non-narrative animation film made using Adobe After Effects or related software is the awardee of this section. Yes, Animahenayon's not all animation.

Audience Choice Award

Category: Professional/Student
Prize: certificate, gift item

At last, the category that doesn't (and will never) leave any local film festival's awards list. You worked hard on your craft, you should flaunt it; the finalist with the highest audience vote wins. Social media is key!

As Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki once said, “The creation of a single world comes from a huge number of fragments and chaos.” If the expectations you set for making an effort didn't meet the reality, remember that you don't get thick skin without getting burnt. You'll get there.
