Some say being "vegan" is just a form of diet where animal-based products are cancelledt! Others think it is just a fad or a trend. On a more extreme note, people would think that vegans are part of a cult. Well, Veg Fest Pilipinas Chief Organizer, TJ Jocson, has heard worse things within years of being a vegan.

FYI, Vegans are people who refrain from consuming anything animal-based, whether for food or fashion. This includes meat, dairy products, leather and fur, and even honey. They strictly eat and consume only plant-based products.

Ever since TJ switched his lifestyle to becoming a vegan, he gave up every product that is from animals--food, bags, shoes. He didn't became a vegan just to be healthy. In fact, going vegan is more than just the food and diet.

For Animal Welfare!

We don’t just mean the usual pigs, fishes, cows, and chickens (hi, kapatid!), that are usually slaughtered for food. Vegans want to protect animal welfare and they start by not killing or using them for food or any form of personal consumption. Yes, even if it means giving up bacon.

"It would be the common sense of the fact na kailangan niyong isipin na sila ay hayop din at may buhay din. Katulad ng alaga mong pusa, ng alaga mong aso," TJ said.

For a Better Environment

Going vegan also means conserving our resources and taking care of the environment. Take this for example. Apparently, making a burger patty takes take a lot more effort and resources than we expected. 660 gallons of water are needed to make a 1/3 pound hamburger. If you would make about 33 hamburgers, you would use about 22,000 gallons of water, which is enough to fill an olympic-sized swimming pool.

For a Healthy Body

Since vegans only eat plant-based food, they have healthier bods than omnivores. Studies show that they have lower risk of heart diseases and cancer. No meat also means lower cholesterol levels. Honestly, we stan the vegan self-discipline.

For Inner Peace

TJ also shared about how being vegan changed his view towards the “world”. His attitude towards people also changed because he wanted them to see that he is a "healthy vegan" both in body and mind. Compared to before, he is now calmer and is more careful with actions.

Going vegan should be a conscious choice. "You cannot persuade someone na maging vegan kung wala talaga silang plano to change themselves for themselves and the planet," TJ said.  It would require a great deal of sacrifice and discipline, but if you would really want to change your lifestyle and go vegan, you may want to want to check out Veg Fest Pilipinas. Thee event would offer vegan food and talks for those who would want to learn about vegan lifestyle. There will also be music, cooking lessons, and celebrities who will celebrate the vegan lifestyle with you.
