We all know how festive May can get. It’s the month when most fiestas and other indigenous activities are held throughout the Philippines. Seeing how rich Filipino cultural history is, especially this time of the year, the country will recognize just that—it's National Heritage Month!
Meanwhile, Inside Manila this month aims to raise awareness on bullying, fake news, and hate in all forms. Do we let these hostile, provocative actions slide or do we combat them? We'll tackle the whys and hows of these issues and more.
Aside from the mid-year elections on May 13, there's more to look forward to this month of May; There’s the World Press Freedom Day on May 3 and Mother’s Day on May 12, to name a few.
May 4. No Pants Day
Everyone's got a gimmick now to break social taboos, and “No Pants Day” is no exception. What do we say to our pants? Not today. Wearing shorts or skirts in lieu of pants isn't in the don'ts of the rulebook so you can simply opt for those.
May 9. Lost Sock Memorial Day
We're not surprised anymore with whatever weird holiday comes next. It's often the thing you least expect that gets the celebration. In this case, commemorate the missing socks from your drawers and recycle the single leftover ones instead of throwing them out. While you're at it, maybe try out the “KonMari” method of folding clothes.
May 10. Clean Up Your Room Day
They say your room is a reflection of your mind, so cleaning it up is one way to detoxify your life. Get your hands dirty by having a general cleaning ala Marie Kondo from Netflix's Tidying Up With Marie Kondo. Besides, what good is the privilege of a shelter when it's filled with clutter more than humans? If at first, you don't succeed, then ask your family for an exciting general cleaning.
May 18. International Museum Day 2019
In the midst of taking in the beach and other summer activities, there’s a day where history buffs and art enthusiasts gather to celebrate International Museum Day. The Philippines boasts of art, culture, and history—our local museums will attest to that. Museum patron or not, here's a comprehensive guide to museums inside Manila for your reference. You're welcome!
May 20. Be a Millionaire Day
The lack of bucks in our pockets is either appalling or satisfactory—we all have preferences. Today, exert maximum effort on your #RoadTo1Mill. Get yourself a goal-oriented planner and scribble plans on how to kickstart your business in bazaars, grow a YouTube channel, and several other million-dollar ideas you may have. But don't forget that success isn't measured by your financial status; it is with happiness and personal attainment one can call themselves successful.
May 27. Sun Screen Day
Sunburn is, unfortunately, now an all too common occurrence; even a short-term sun exposure leaves you lobster-red usually for a few days. From your hands to your legs, protect your assets from sun damage with sunscreen or travel-friendly makeup products. Prevention is always better than cure, you know.
May 28. Hamburger Day
Ah, burgers: the star of the grill and many American TV shows such as Spongebob Squarepants. This meal, while of Western origin, is beloved everywhere. Honor this day by burger-hopping around the city or learning how to make homemade burgers. Craving, yet?
In some ways, celebrating weird, exciting holidays make observing traditional ones a walk in the park. Be it official or not, these holidays offer reasons to recognize the mundane, making life all the more enjoyable.
