According to a UNAIDS report, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases in the Philippines grew twice as much in the past six years—from an estimated 4,300 in 2010 to 10,500 in 2016. These statistics made the Philippines one of the fastest growing HIV-stricken epidemics in the Asia Pacific Region. The numbers continue to increase because of unaware carriers of the virus—probably because there’s still a social stigma on HIV. People living with this kind of condition are often rejected, cut out of social activities and gatherings; this stigma even prevents them from accessing HIV treatment since they are ashamed of their condition.
If you are having doubts about your health, most especially if you’re sexually active, it’s time to consult an expert. Know that HIV is not just acquired through sexual intercourse—it can also be obtained through the sharing of needles for drug use, childbirth, breastfeeding, or blood transfusions. Most of the common symptoms show up late that’s why getting tested and knowing your status as early as possible can help you live a long and healthy life.
Don’t be afraid to get yourself tested! Responsible and safe sex is a priority and part of our healthcare. Here are some of the free clinics inside Manila you can turn to for HIV-related matters:
