(Inside Manila) Miss Universe Philippines 2018 Catriona Gray is in for an interesting competition as Spain finally crowned transgender Angela Ponce as their representative for the upcoming prestigious pageant.

She will be Miss Universe’s first ever transgender contestant.

Her coronation came close to the LGBTQ's celebration of Pride Month.

Angela completed her transition after a series of surgeries and joined Miss World Spain a year later, but fell short of winning the crown. Nonetheless, she still felt like a winner having represented her province, Cadiz.

In 2012, the Miss Universe Organization allowed transgender women to compete in the pageant as long as they won their national pageants.

The upcoming international pageant will take place later this year. The contestants are aiming to succeed Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.
