(Inside Manila) In the shifting landscape of business, some companies choose to do nothing just as long as they get the profits they need to keep the commercial going, but this company, given that their lifeline is cigarette, chose to move away from it.

Philip Morris International (PMI), known in the manufacturing business of cigarettes, is pushing to build its future on smoke-free products with its vision to one day replace cigarettes with it.

As part of the regular publication of its research efforts to develop smoke-free alternatives, PMI on Wednesday released the latest scientific impact of their most advanced products – the electrically-heated tobacco product (EHTP, marketed as IQOS) and carbon-heated tobacco products marketed as TEEPS.

PMI’s report indicated that their smoke-free products resulted in suggestively lower level of toxicants compared to cigarette smoke.

What is IQOS and how does it works

IQOS is an urbane alternative to cigarettes that is designed to heat tobacco to generate enough amount of flavored nicotine vapor without burning the tobacco. Since tobacco normally contains harmful chemicals when burned at temperature in excess of 600°C, IQOS heats tobacco with lower temperature at 400°C without fire, combustion, or smoke.

IQOS has three major gears: heated tobacco units called HeatSticks or HEETS, holder, and charger.

To use IQOS, a user must insert the heated tobacco unit into the holder, which contains the electronically controlled heater; push the button on and then draw on the heated tobacco unit; and once finished, remove the unit from the holder and dispose it properly.

These IQOS are available in key cities in Andorra, Bulgaria, Canary Islands, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Curacao, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Italy, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Lithuania, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Palestine, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Turkish Cyprus, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and in some Duty Free shops.

PMI’s other revolutionary product is the carbon-heated tobacco which, just like IQOS, releases nicotine-flavored vapor but it uses patented HeatControl Technology that separates tobacco from its carbon-heat source content.

To use TEEPS, the carbon heat tip must be lighted to ignite the carbon heat source that supplies energy to the heat without burning the tobacco and then puff on it to inhale its true taste. Similar to IQOS, it must also be disposed properly.

Until the last man smoking

PMI vowed to continue creating a future that’s free of smoke while encouraging more independent bodies to join their revolution. The company has invested over $4.5 billion in the project since 2008 and has employed more than 400 world-class scientists, engineers, and technicians to execute their mission – to switch hundreds of millions of adult smokers to less harmful alternatives.
