(Inside Manila) The country has its newest eco-warrior!

Fil-Rome, Italy's Celeste Cortesi reigned supreme among the 42 lovely candidates during the Miss Earth Philippines 2018 coronation night held at the Mall of Asia Arena held last Saturday, May 19.

Her winning question was: "The deterioration of Boracay left our president with no choice but to close the island for six months for rehabilitation. What should be done to make sure that what happens to Boracay does not happen to our other tourist destinations?"

To which she answered, ""I agree with the decision [of] President Duterte. And I think that Boracay needs a drainage system because the 'juice' of trash goes directly on the ocean. We have to control the capacity of hotels."

She first impressed the judges during the "hashtag round", in which she had to tackle about #ZeroWaste.

"Let me think about the 5 Rs. I think that we have to practice the 5 Rs everyday: reuse, reduce, recycle, rot, and refuse. Thank you," she answered.

Halimatu Yushawu of Titay, Zamboanga Sibugay won Miss Philippines Eco-Tourism while Jean de Jesus was crowned Miss Philippines Fire. Berjaneth Chee of Balingasag, Misamis Oriental and Zahra Bianca Zaldua of Las Pinas City won Miss Philippines Water and Miss Philippines Air, respectively.

Celeste will compete in the international Miss Earth competition later this year.
