Summer is almost here, and long holidays are already calling for out-of-town trips and vacation leaves for the Day of Valor on the 9th and the Holy Week from the 14th to the 20th. Filipinos will hold Lenten rites such as the Moriones Festival in Marinduque, Centurion Festival in Quezon, and Turumba in Laguna. It's also National Literature Month, which is all the more reason to celebrate the history and cultural legacy of the Philippines.
In between these national observances, quirky holidays are hiding in plain sight. For the first quarter of 2018, we've noted mundane things like popcorn, the thesaurus to familiar occasions like Opposite Day and Random Acts of Kindness, and more. Continue to spice up your 2019 and mark your calendars with these events!
April 7. No Housework Day
What's a dishwasher? Marie Kondo, who? For one day, we don't know either. Skip the change of clothes if you want no laundry. Dine on paper plates, so the sink stays empty. Be an extra slob for a day and leave the cleaning frenzy for the morrow. For those with organized roommates, we suggest you ditch this holiday. You don't want passive-aggressive notes left around your unit.
Apr 10. Siblings Day
They say the bonds formed out of choice are stronger than those you're bound to by the womb. If you're best friends with your siblings, you can get the best of both worlds. Take them to their favorite restaurant or surprise them with the gift they've been mentioning for so long. Let them know you appreciate them—not just the youngest child, okay?
Apr 14. International Moment of Laughter Day
We're sending this memo to every human being in the world: don't forget to laugh out loud. Laugh until your belly hurts. Laugh until you cry. This holiday is created to remind you of the importance of de-stressing. Not only does laughing serves as a break from a stressful daily life, but also cheers up people around you. Take the contagious laughter compilations on YouTube, for instance.
Apr 20. 420 (Weed Day)
It's 4/20, and it's time for a blunt...discussion on the uses and causes of Cannabis, more popularly known as marijuana. Celebrate today by learning about the psychoactive drug. Dope memes will also be in high demand, but only a few will hit the jackpot (stop resharing old memes, jeez).
Apr 23. Take a Chance Day
Will the odds be in your favor? Take that leap of faith and overcome your fears because Take A Chance Day embraces our failures with zero judgments. Act like you're Jim Carrey from the 2008 film Yes Man (sans the method acting) and get out of your comfort zone. April 23 is also Lover's Day so why not take a chance on that special someone of yours? Confess under the stars because the Lyrids Meteor Shower peaks tonight!
Apr 28. Kiss Your Mate Day
Kissing is the most intimate physical interaction two people in love can do, right after holding hands. In many cultures, however, it is considered harmless and normal to kiss their friends' faces. So be it with your SO or with your platonic relationships, kiss your mate. Nobody can hold it against you, as long as consent is given, of course.
Apr 30. International Jazz Day
Move aside (for a while), Pop. Louis Daniel Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald are on loop this Jazz Day. The genre may not fare to everyone, but there's no going back once you acquire the taste of the blues. Borrow your grandparents' turntable and slide through their swingy vinyl records. Dance to it.
Some fellas are only now taking 2019 seriously, and that's fine—adult life isn't always easy. But happiness is an inside job; it's not the failed promise of a work-life balance or the flaws in the game of life that'll adjust for you. Find it within you and maybe use these weird yet fun holidays to help you out.
