(Inside Manila) To curb the heavy traffic during the holiday season, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and mall operators have agreed to change their operating hours from 11 am to 10 pm.

The adjusted mall hours started running on October 15, 2017. The original operating hours—10 am to 9pm—is set to resume on Monday, January 15.

MMDA assistant general manager Jojo Garcia said that the modified hours helped improve the traffic by almost 10% during the busy holiday season.

According to the MMDA data shared by Garcia, the travel speed on busy streets of Manila increased by 1.62 kilometers per hour (kph) from 17.44 kph in September to 19.06 in November.

MMDA is now waiting for the response of malls regarding the request to maintain the late operating hours or at least extend it until January 29.
