(Inside Manila) Long before the internet era came into the spotlight, kids have always resorted to television as a source of entertainment.

Every afternoon after school, children would sit in front of the television, waiting for their favorite anime to flash into the screens.

Here are 12 anime shows that shaped this generation's childhood.

Cardcaptor Sakura

Who could have forgotten the magical adventures of Sakura Kinomoto? She was a simple school girl until she accidentally released the Clow Cards. Sakura became a card captor, retrieving the missing cards with the help of friends.

Because of Digimon, kids would like to have their own virtual pets. Digimon, which is a short form for “Digital Monsters" was one of the most popular shows back in the early 2000s with adorable Augumon is the most well-known Digimon of his batch.


The action-packed adventure of half-demon Inuyasha is one of the anticipated animes of its time. It tells the story of a girl from the modern times, Kagome, who was transported to the Sengoku period of Japan. She embodied the magical Shikon Jewel, which she accidentally shattered when a demon tried to attack her. She and Inuyasha then embarked on a journey to find all the jewel's pieces before the powerful demon Naraku can.

Fushigi Yuugi

Also known as the "mysterious play", "Fushigi Yugi" follows the story of Miaka and Yui, two middle school students who got transported in ancient china thruogh a book entitled "The universe of the Four Gods". Yui was transported to real world immediately but Miaka finds himself being the Priestess of Suzaku and falling in love with the Celestial Warrior named Tamahome.

Ghost Fighter

“Ghost Fighter” or “Yu Yu Hakusho” became one of the most iconic anime series of its time. It was shown in the Philippines in the early 2000s and the characters of Eugene, Dennis, Vincent, Alfred and even the antagonist Taguro became instant hits.

Who could have neglected this adorable blue "cat"? This anime is focused on Doraemon, a robotic cat, who was sent to be in aid of Nobita, a bullied boy who does not do well in school. Doraemon has the iconic pocket where he keeps all of his gadgets.

Flame of Recca

“Flame of Recca” follows the story of Recca Hanabishi, a teenage boy who claims to be a ninja. He soon discovered that he has the ability to control flames and learned that he is indeed the son of the sixth generation leader of ninja clan, Hokage.

One of the well-loved anime series of all time, “Once Piece” paved the way for anime fans to meet Luffy, a pirate who was inspire by his childhood idol, Red Haired Shanks. Together with his "Straw Hat Pirates" crew, he went on a journey to find the treasure one piece so he can proclaim himself as king of the pirates.

Naruto's journey to achieve his dream of becoming Konoha's Hokage was an adventure one could not easily forget. This ninja-themed anime tells the story of friendship, sacrifice, and determination to fight against the evil ninja Orochimaru to save the town of Konoha and other ninja villages.

Hanamichi Sakuragi can be considered one of the most beloved anime characters. He was a delinquent turned basketball player of Shohuku High School just to impress his crush, Haruko Akagi. However, Sakuragi have come to love the sport and though there are misunderstandings among the team members, they work together to be the best basketball team in Japan.

“Samurai X” or “Rurouni Kenshin” tells the story of Himura Kenshin, a murderer who wants to atone for his sins by offering protection and need to those in need. Kenshin is famous for an X-shaped scar on his cheek and his weapon, Sakabato, which is a reverse-blade sword.
