Tara Baraha!: A Visual Love Letter to the Philippines

Playing cards have been a part of our pass times for a while now—from children's games to gambling, or as a tool for magic tricks. The novelty of playing cards has become a playground for graphic designers, too. The simple constraints of four suits and thirteen different cards can unleash tons of creativity while staying true to a playing card’s entertaining purpose. With this, playing cards have evolved in its usage; what started as a tool for entertainment, it has become a tool for advertising, information, and identity. Case in point: Tara Baraha!

Tara Baraha! wonderfully marries function, design, and Pinoy pride in a deck of cards inspired by and to further inspire the Filipino culture.

Play Your Way Around The Philippines

It started with Jo Gamos, the founder of Tara Baraha!, and his fascination for playing cards and travel. Years of collecting decks from around the world led to the realization that the Philippines did not have Philippine-themed cards.

Together with Jo’s artist friends, Vanessa Gaston & Kil Camalon, they created a full suite inspired by the desire to show the beauty if the Philippines. This is also Jo’s way to help foreigners discover our country, and for Filipinos to showcase their homegrown talents and local products/offerings—and these cards are here to reshuffle our love for the country.

A visual journey

Each Tara Baraha! deck comes with 52 cards each containing a local trivia and three joker cards that might inspire you to book a flight to a local destination.

As only one side of each card–the face–must serve a purpose, the back is a blank canvas for artistic expression—each card incorporates the Philippine jeepney set against a background inspired by local woven fabrics. Apart from jeepneys being a grand cultural symbol of the country, it stands as a reminder that each Tara Baraha! card is a ride to our country’s best and greatest.

See the kings in Barong Tagalog, the queens in Barot’ Saya and Jacks in Camisa de Chino. From Filipino traditions, dishes to local phrases, every important part of the Filipino identity is reflected in the card's design.

Tara Baraha! playing cards are palm-sized galleries of art and inspiration, tourism and nationalism, archiving the cultural values of Filipinos—all while being a form of our favorite pass time. It makes a good gift for tourists, balikbayans, or for one who enjoys collecting play cards or is about to collect one. Play your way around the Philippines!

For every Tara Baraha! deck sold, a portion of the proceeds will go to Dream Big Pilipinas, an NGO that helps give underprivileged kids better opportunities through football and education.

Get your hands on Tara Baraha! decks through their IG page or through Tara Baraha!’s partner store, Tali Ti Amianan, in La Union.
