Variety shows dominate the noontime slot of Philippine television for a reason: Filipinos love genuine entertainment during their siesta. It's a formula that's been tried-and-tested for decades and is far from its shrinking point. Things couldn't get any better—that is, until Aja Aja Tayo.
Aja Aja Tayo (아자 아자 타요) is the first Filipino-Korean celebrity variety game show, featuring a mix of Filipino and Korean hosts and guests. Aja Aja is a Korean phrase spoken to encourage others. It is usually followed by the word "fighting" and accompanied with a fist bump. In this case, Aja Aja Tayo means we are in this together, a message the show aims to deliver to its audience.
Following its successful run in 2018, Aja Aja Tayo returns to TV5 for its second season. ShowBT Philippines, the show’s producer, revealed the news in a press launch held on February 7 at K-Pub BBQ Grill in BGC. The brand-new set of hosts is composed of the talented K-Pop mentor Hong Ganda, Asuang lead actor Alwyn Uytingco, the energetic Miss Korea Jean Kim, Brazilian-Japanese actor Fabio Ide, “Kakaibabe” Donnalyn Bartolome, and "teen dance prince" Julian Trono. The cast will grace the station every week to play a set of Filipino-Korean fusion games.
What sets Aja Aja Tayo apart from other noontime shows is how it targets Filipinos with a warm embrace to Korean culture—particularly the Korean Pop or K-Pop—as their primary audience. For its premiere in July 2018, the show brought BNF, a three-member K-Pop boy group composed of Ha Bin, Harang, and D1. This year, they got BIGFLO’s Euijin and Lex to complete the cast.
While both featured groups aren't as popular as South Korean groups BTS and BLACKPINK, the initiative to bring rising K-Pop acts to the Philippines to film a variety show cleared the line for what once was an impossibility. For all we know, it could be the start of something big, and ShowBT recognizes it.
A variety show in nature and a fresh take on Philippine television entertainment, Aja Aja Tayo is equal parts funny and heartwarming. Catch the whole barkada and watch them play every Sunday, from 10:30 am to 12 pm, on TV5.
