This Week Inside Manila: Approved Laws, Traslacion 2019, Baby Shark Hits the Charts and More

Events and happenings unfolded before us quickly—from the Feast of Black Nazarene to newly signed laws. And just like that, the first two weeks of 2019 are over. This week’s highlights gave us more reasons to hold on to our new year’s resolutions. It also provided a window to peek through the nostalgic Sexbomb days.

Sure, this has been a busy week and to save you a google, we collated news under our radar. Here’s what went down Inside Manila:

Traslacion 2019 Finished Without Casualties but With Loads of Trash

Good News: Traslacion 2019 ended with “no untoward incidents”. Bad News: It took five to seven trucks to collect trash from Quirino Grandstand. When will we ever learn, people?

Sexbomb Dancers Are Looking for New Recruits
We can sense career shifts this year

Thinking of a career change? The crew that brought us the Ispageti Song and its dance moves is looking for a new member. The Auditions for the Sexbomb NewGen Girls 2019 will be held at the Sexbomb NewGen Studio at 56 Kamias Road, Quezon City on January 26 and June 29.

Must be 15-20 years old
Must have no existing contracts with other management
Should be willing to attend regular dance training as scholars once qualified

Birth Certificate (photocopy)
Valid ID (SSS/TIN/Drivers/School)
1-minute audition routine
Letter of parental consent if below 18 years old

Work From Home is now Signed Into law
Yup, a law. Not a Fifth Harmony song

Republic Act t 11165 or the "Work From Home Law" is signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday, January 10. It aims to promote work-life-balance allowing private sector employees to “telecommunicate” or work from home.

Last Day of January Is Declared National Bible Day
Perhaps it’s time to renew our faith, eh?

Authored and sponsored by Senato Manny Pacquiao, the R.A. 11163 or the "National Bible Day Law" that aims to recognize the Holy Bible as the center of Christian faith. President Duterte approved it on Friday, January 11.

War Veterans’ Monthly Pension Increased to 20,000php

Following the approval of R.A. 11164 last December 2018, 5,000php to 20,000php increase in pension will be granted to old-age war veterans. According to the law, pensions are only applicable to living veterans and are not transferable. It will take effect 15 days after the news is published at least two newspapers on general circulation.

'You' Stars Penn Badgley, Shay Mitchell Are Coming to Manila
They are coming for YOU!

Netflix Philippines on Tuesday, January 8, announced that they are bringing Penn Badgley and Shay Mitchell from Netflix's American thriller series You in Manila. Penn plays the protagonist Joe, a bookstore manager who falls head over heels with an aspiring writer and Shay plays his nemesis, Peach. The Special Fan Event will be held on January 15, 5:30 p.m., at The Greenbelt Gallery in Greenbelt 5.

Ateneo Bully’s Mother Apologized for Son’s Misconduct

The mother of Ateneo de Manila University Grade 9 student, who was involved in a bullying controversy, apologized to the school and to those whom his son hurt. In a report on 24 Oras on Wednesday, Joaquin Montes’ mother asked for forgiveness and understanding for his son. Montes was caught humiliating his schoolmates in at least three videos which went viral in December last year.

In the coming weeks, Twitter is set to test out new features for the platform. The two new features include online status indicators and “icebreakers” tweets to flush out abusive ones on the platform.

The little shark swam faster

Would you believe it? The catchy children song “Baby Shark” swam its way to Billboard Hot 100; sharing the higher spots with Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, and Khalid. Billboard listed it as “Highest Ranking Debut” on their list. This hit song is also a Youtube star with 2.1 billion views.
