2018 was a year of victories, uphill battles, and lots of breaking news—we have witnessed President Rodrigo Duterte’s pronouncements, and actions drew flak, another Marcos convicted of graft and corruption, and Catriona Gray winning the Miss Universe 2018 title for the Philippines.

All these breaking news, no matter how explosive or superficial, made every writer grind and swoon until their word bank is empty. Yes, the process of writing gets tough each day but thanks to good music, writers can keep the stress at a bare minimum. And when the deadline is tight, these are the songs that helped us through it.

“It's a song about getting high...on dreams, inhibitions, and Urie's notes as high as his forehead. High Hopes is a song that conditions you to aim high without hesitation. When it comes to going for your dreams, everything else is just noise except for this song, your gut feeling, and what mama said.”

-Erika Lagunzad on “High Hopes” by Panic! At The Disco

“I am not a fan of choosing a favorite song but I can say what I'm currently playing on loop, and that is “Sunflower” by Post Malone. A big part of the reason why is Miles Morales from the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse movie. There was this scene (no spoilers) where he was struggling, and humming this song made him calm, and I think that's what the song makes me feel too—calm.”

-Jace Amodo on “Sunflower” by Post Malone

“Woah, once again I am a child
I let it all go, of everything that I know, yeah
Of everything that I know, yeah
And nothing hurts anymore, I feel kinda free"
Ang saya kantahin nitong part na 'to nung kanta, lalo na yung last line.”

-Dani Elevazo on “Ghost Town” by Kanye West

““Balang Araw” 'yung isa sa mga go-to songs ko kapag gusto kong mag-drama. 'Yung words din kasi sobrang intense, lalo na 'yung bridge part. Kahit ' di ka sobrang maka-relate, mararamdaman mo. Nakaka-LSS, sa totoo lang.”

-Anne Marielle Eugenio on “Balang Araw” by I Belong to The Zoo

“I personally love Jess Connelly. Her music is something I always admire because she gave a fresh take on R&B. I love that in the midst of a sea of musicians trying to make a name in the music scene, she managed to stand out above the rest. I’m too deep+involved not just with her music but with her style, too.”

-Maria Romero on "deep+involved" by Jess Connelly
