We had plans for this year. There are theater acts we can’t wait to see and we’ve already bought tickets to see some of them. But due to the pandemic, the government urged us to stay at home and avoid mass gatherings--including productions. As much as we feel disappointed with the quarantine, we have to obey for our health’s safety. Thankfully, we can still enjoy theater shows online.
Hintayan ng Langit
This play written by Juan Miguel Severo can be streamed for free on The Cultural Center of the Philippines’ YouTube channel. It talks about two people who wounded each other in the past and found each other in an unlikely place. Hintayan ng Langit is one bitter scene after the other but it guarantees a lot of fun and of course, romance. The stream lasts only for a week.
Ang Huling El Bimbo
Ready to cry your eyes out? ABS-CBN will stream the Filipino musical Ang Huling El Bimbo on their Facebook page and YouTube Channel on May 8-9. This play will feature the songs of local rock band Eraserheads. The show is free but viewers are encouraged to donate to ABS-CBN Foundation's Pantawid ng Pag-ibig, which will benefit the families affected by the ECQ.
Theaters may be closed for now but that wouldn’t stop Tanghalang Pilipino from performing. On May 6, the company’s Pansamantanghalan will show Lolo Doc, a “monovlog” performed by Nanding Josef about a pandemic frontliner who is committed to saving people’s lives--even if it means sacrificing his own. You can stream it on TP’s YouTube Channel.
Ang Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang
The Philippine Educational and Theater Association recently streamed Ang Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang on their YouTube Channel. It features the classic Pinoy childhood story, complete with song and dance performances and shadow plays.
Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady
Starting May 7, you can watch this one-act play on CCP’s YouTube Channel. Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady is about sibling relationship and rivalry and it will be online for one week, just like the other shows CCP uploads.
International Stage Musicals
A YouTube channel called The Show Must Go On features one stage musical per week, which is up for 48 hours. For the past weeks, it showed the masterpieces of Andrew Lloyd Weber, including The Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies, and Jesus Christ Superstar. These shows are for free but you can also donate to the channel’s supported arts causes.
May this list be of company during the remaining days of ECQ. Grab your popcorn, find a comfortable seat and watch the curtains unveil the shows at your home.
