Folk is traditional music that has a distinctive beat and talks mostly the life of rural Filipinos. Younger people find more reasons to love this genre, especially with folk artists on the rise. And if you're wondering what folk sounds like these days, The Ridleys should be on your music queue.

Anyone active in intimate local gig scene must've heard of The Ridleys and its folk-inspired tunes more than once.

The band, composed of Benny Manaligod, Jan De Vera, Bryant Ayes, and Joric Canlas, started in March 2016 when they joined the University of Santo Tomas’s Arki Battle of the Bands. Fun Fact: The Ridleys’ band name was inspired by Daisy Ridley and the pressure to come up with a name last-minute.

The Ridleys writes songs with captivating melodies and equally catchy lyrics. We’re sure the stories behind their songs are as interesting as they sound. Inside Manila is lucky enough to have an interview with the band and know how they come up with some of their hits.

The ‘Aphrodite’ in Disguise

Here I am, just another boy
Singing songs that others have sung
Tryna find the words to employ
To adore the goddess of love
-Aphrodite, The Ridleys

One of their well-known songs is “Aphrodite.” The story behind this song is a “smitten” Benny.

“Benny had a huge crush on his social dance partner. Twice a week for a whole semester, they were dance partners. Benny was so smitten, he was convinced she was Aphrodite in disguise,” the band shared.

This is only one of the love-themed songs they’ve written—but not only the kind of girlfriend-boyfriend kind. They dig deeper into different kinds of love: Phileo (brotherly love), Eros (romantic love), and Agape (sacrificial love).

Scattered Thoughts Turned Into ‘Rorschach Blots’

In every single circumstance
We keep things in a way that makes more sense
All these Rorschach blots
Bottles of scotch are messing with my brain
-Rorschach Blots, The Ridleys

The Ridleys also had other themes for music. Sometimes, they created songs from their raw thoughts—just like what happened with Rorschach Blots. Rorschach Test is a test that involves the evaluation of a subject's response to ambiguous inkblots. This started when Benny, a psychology student back then, learned about the free association. He wrote everything down on paper without thinking too hard or filtering anything.

“It didn’t make sense to me as I was writing it. 'She/I don’t know what it means, but it doesn’t matter.’ But later on, I understood what was going on in my psyche. I was trying to make sense of the mess that was in my brain — all the dark thoughts and regrets that were in my head. I just had to express them, even if it was vague,” Benny said.

The Home of the ‘Prodigals’

I once was caged but now I'm free
And I don't really wanna go home
I once was blind but now I see
-Prodigals, The Ridleys

Music or art, in general, gives us the freedom to express ourselves. It also has the power to make us things from a different perspective. The Ridleys’ “Prodigals” is a song about how they think home is not what they thought it was. Loosely based on the famous Prodigal Son story, it is about someone running away from home.

You’ll find their songs stuck into your head without searching the lyrics and Google and memorizing them. We won’t even blame you if you started to dance with your headphones on.

But it’s not just the words and melodies that got us hooked. Deep down, we know that these songs subtly tell the tale of what we’re going through. And if it’s about expressing feelings about love or any personal matters, The Ridleys can help you tell the story.
