Ella Mai, the breakthrough R&B artist, continues to stay on the R&B charts, riding on the crest of the success that is her self-titled album and is paving the way for female R&B artists. Here are facts you need to know about Ella Mai before her Manila Tour aka The Debut Tour, happening on November 6 at the New Frontier Theater, Quezon City.

Ella Mai Rose to Fame via Instagram

Ella Mai started her music by posting 15-second clips of herself singing covers of popular songs on Instagram. The UK singer got noticed after uploading her cover of Fetty Wap's hit single "679." DJ Mustard contacted her via Instagram Direct Message and the rest is history.

She Auditioned for 'The X Factor UK'

Ella Mai appeared on the eleventh season of The X Factor UK as part of a girl group named "Arize." However, the trio didn't make it past the first auditions, and they disbanded shortly afterward.

Ella Mai's Hit Single 'Boo'd Up' Went Platinum in June 2018

Boo’d Up, her 2017 single, dubbed by Rolling Stone as “one of the biggest singles by a breakout female R&B artist in the past ten years” got Nicki Minaj doing a remix, and Stevie Wonder calling her to perform "Superstition" with him at a charity event.

Her single peaked at no. 5 on the "US Billboard 100" and broke the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a woman on the R&B/Hip-hop Airplay chart. The achievement placed Ella Mai's name in the Best R&B Song category in the prestigious "2019 Grammy Awards."

'Boo’d Up' Took Time to Rise

A lot of people will recognize Mai most because of her song “Boo’d Up,” but “Boo’d Up” wasn’t an instant smash hit. It took some time for it to build while Mai was building up her profile by going on tour with more established artists. Eventually, these processes built up critical momentum, thus enabling “Boo’d Up” to be the smash hit it is known today.

She is Leading More Female R&B Singers Back to the Charts

Ella Mai, who is as passionate about music as she is about women empowerment, is now recognized by the Recording Industry Association of America as one of its “First Timers”–artists whose album earned Gold or Platinum certification by the RIAA for titles released in the last two years. She also won
Top R&B Artist at the 2019 Billboard Awards. No doubt hers is one profoundly compelling voice that needs to be heard.
