If you’re thinking of throwing away your clothes, we’d like you to think of how the textile industry is already contributing 92 million tons of waste each year. Find ways to repurpose old clothes or do it like how RIOtaso Clothing does—curating fabric scraps to make a new one.

RIOtaso Clothing is a local brand promoting sustainable fashion. Instead of going for new fabric pieces, they mainly use retaso or scrap fabrics to make stylish lifestyle apparel like tote bags, belt bags and more.

RIOtaso came to be in 2019 after Rio Estuar, the brain behind the brand, moved to live by the beach and has become active in beach cleaning trips. There she realized how much waste the fashion industry contributes. Dropping everything, even her own thriving streetwear brand at the time, she rebranded. Wittily coming up with the name RIOtaso from Retaso and her own.

To make her RIOtaso vision come to life, Rio frequently visited seamstresses to buy their scrap fabric. Most agree to; others gave theirs for free. She then sorts it out, carefully curating the pieces then sewing it all together. Think of it as a better version of quilting items. Currently, the brand has already produced bucket hats, tops, and dresses.

Rio has also employed seamstresses from the Gawad Kalinga Foundation to produce more RIOtaso items.

There are several ways to help RIOtaso. You can directly buy their items, donate unused but wearable clothing, or help the brand financially through their crowdfunding page (you can get a RIOtaso item in return!).
